Pixel Peeping

Forgive me for I have sinned as a photographer. I log onto the Internet to check the latest rumored specs of cameras and I covet them like they were my own. It doesn’t even matter to me that these digital cameras are merely rumors and most rumors never even see the light of day. I sit at my computer dreaming about functions I can never use, and sometimes don’t even know what they would be used for.
Yes, I am pixel peeper. I’ve said it! I have gazed at ghastly large megapixel counts and think about what that size and girth could do for my photography. I am not afraid to admit it any longer.
A dirtiness sets over me as I type in the words canonrumors.com and nikonrumors.com to find the latest gossip I lust after day in and day out. The fantastical thing is that I know I don’t need a new camera. My current camera suits my needs just fine, and anything else would just be superfluous at this point. Furthermore, I don’t have the money to indulge my fantasies.
What is causing this putrid pervasive peepery? To be honest, I don’t know. I love my camera. I bought it used a year ago, but since it was an older, high-end model, I purchased it for a good price. At press time (or when I click publish) the DSLR is about five years old, which is ancient in terms of digital cameras. However, by even current standards it still takes fantastic photos. Sure it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the newest cameras, but as far as taking pictures is concerned it is hard to beat.
Is it merely human nature to always want something bigger and better? Possibly. On the other than it might just be socially constructed materialism, or keeping up with the Jones’.
Either way, I am pretty sure it isn’t a healthy thing to do. This is something that I am going to try to work on. So if you see me pixel peeping…cover my eyes.
